“His unparalleled courage and leadership inspired all those present, including those who might have otherwise fled in panic, to remain and fight the enemy until captured.” Medal of Honor Citation

Captain Emil Kapaun, Chaplain of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, was one of the heroes of the Korean War.

In the face of overwhelming odds he aided his fellow soldiers, spiritually and emotionally, through their darkest days. Indeed, such was his impact on his comrades that they described him as “More than a man — a Saint.”

Published only three years after his death, Arthur Tonne’s fascinating biography captures the spirit of this wonderful man who endured unspeakable horrors and faced them all defiantly.

Drawing upon the accounts of his friends, colleagues and family, along with numerous letters written to and from Kapaun, Tonne gives a vivid depiction of his life from his childhood, through to the moment he joined the Catholic Church, his travels across the world, his first days in the army and his final days in a prison camp in Korea.

Arthur Tonne, demonstrates how deeply religious Father Kapaun was, but also how understanding and compassionate he was towards his fellow soldiers and prisoners who did not hold his faith.

The testimonies of those who knew Father Kapaun in the battlefields of Korea are particularly moving. Pfc. Ernest J. Ritter “I’m sure there are hundreds of G. I.’s who will never forget what Father Kapaun has done for them. In their hearts they will always remember how he kept up the G. I.’s morale”.

The Story of Chaplain Kapaun, Patriot Priest of the Korean Conflict is a remarkable account of one Catholic’s personal heroism that constantly gave hope to the soldier’s around him.

Arthur Tonne was an author and Catholic priest. He wrote numerous books during his lifetime and served the community of Pilsen for forty-nine years. This book was first published in 1954 and he died in 2003.

...He was under small arms fire and heavy mortar fire all the time...He must have dragged about fifteen or twenty men out of that field into our trenches." Was hoping for a follow-up story similar to that of "Hacksaw Ridge" and was not disappointed. This fellow was an inspiration both on the battlefield and after having been captured/imprisoned along with his fellow soldiers. Only knock against book I have is lack of numerous photos mentioned in several passages that I would most definitely have liked to seen. An engrossing read otherwise of a true hero and one I would heartily recommend!

The Story of Chaplain Kapaun Patriot Priest of the Korean Conflict MSGR Father Arthur Tonne 9781520216263 Books Reviews

Very well told story about one Catholic priest from Kansas whose faith reached from Western Kansas to Korea. Emil Kaupaun was loved by all who knew him. This story is interesting and easy reading.
Such an inspiring story. What the POWs went through is heartbreaking. It is hard to understand how man can be so cruel to man.
Loved it from start to finish. As a Korean War Veteran, I was happy to read his story. Those first few months were pure hell.
Well written and mesmerizing book. To see the selflessness of a human being while being held as a prisoner of war in the Korean War is very inspiring. Chaplain Kapaun was truly a gift from God to all of the men he served with. A true Saint on earth. You will quickly fall in love with Chaplain Emil Kapaun and want to read the other books on his life. Highly recommend!!
This book recounts the inspiring life of a faithful priest-chaplain who died as a POW in Korea. I highly recommend it to anyone raging their own battles, in the spiritual or physical aspects of life. The saints give us hope- and Father Kapuan will surely one day be beatified.
The book is easy to read and tells a very compelling story of a great spiritual man, a leader and a hero. The story of Father Kapaun tells a story of a man from a much earlier age who answered the call of his God then his country. Serving both this book written completely from letters and personal accounts of those who Chaplain Kaupan provided spiritual guidance, mentorship, and comfort for as a parish priest then as an army chaplain in WWII and Korea. Highly recommended to any who study or just want to learn more about military chaplains, priests from middle America or just military heroes.
The life of a man is hard to sum up into mere words, especially a man such as Fr. Kapaun. The stories in this book do a wonderful job of expressing the character and quality of him. Consistency is something we see, consistently faithful, thinking of others, devoted to God and his fellow man. There were times reading this that I couldn't keep from crying. There is some repetition due to compilation of accounts. This didn't bother me, though. I do wish there had been pictures, but they were easy enough to find online. While Catholics will best be able to appreciate this, non-Catholics will also find his story inspiring. He certainly is deserving of sainthood. I loved this story and recommend it wholeheartedly.
